Everyone needs a digital detox every now and then. One of the best ways to do this in our frantic lives is to take an off the grid camping trip. Picture a serene wilderness with no cell phone signal, no internet, and often no electricity. Bakkrans Nature Reserve, Cederberg

Four small stone cottages offer comfortable cots with clean linen and swimming towels. Two other cottages have dedicated kitchen and a dining areas with gas hobs, plenty of cutlery and a long dining table. Don’t expect any interruption from the outside world up here, as there is no cell signal or electricity. First aid kits are provided, as is 4×4 transfers should you need. Incredibly old rock art dots the nearby cliffs, and just up the trail is a waterfall and deep pool for swimming.

Mountain Zebra National Park, Eastern Cape

The mountain cottages high up on the plateau offer a haven not only for tired city slickers, but the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra as well. Two small huts called Bakana and Umthhombo are secluded and rustic. No Electricity, cell signal or internet are available and this site is only accessible via 4×4. Cooking can only be done by braai or gas.

Bride’s Veil Chalet, Southern Drakensberg

This large stone house comfortably sleeps eight people. The roaring fireplace in the lounge chases away the winter chill, which can be quite severe when it snows on the nearby mountains. Be prepared to simply spend time in nature as there is no internet, electricity or cell signal. The kitchen is well appointed with a gas hob and outside braai area. You are most welcome to bring your entire family, including dogs and horses. Dogs will have to take a De Flea tablet before being allowed however, but these are available from the cabin’s owner.
