We think everyone should get to enjoy all that South Africa has to offer, most of all the wisest of our nation – the gogos. The “Gogos on Tour” initiative aims to treat our senior citizens to some awesome experiences at various places across their provinces.
This week, the lovely gogos from the Northern Cape were treated and delighted to a host of activities, and this is what they got up to…
The Big Hole Tour – Diamond Mining Tour
The enthusiastic senior tourists got to explore The Big Hole, one Kimberley’s popular attractions. The gogos experienced a day in a miner’s life and the 19th-century diamond rush era. The viewing platform was the ideal place that offered incredible views of the Big Hole, leaving them in awe of the sheer scale and depth of the world’s largest hand-dug excavation site. The tour also included a visit to the old town, the diamond vault and more.

For lunch, The Occidental Bar & Restaurant offered a great variety of local cuisine to satisfy the gogos’ appetite. The restaurant is situated in the heart of Kimberley at The Big Hole, and was the perfect setting to end their tour.
Accommodation at the Savoy Hotel & Conference Centre
The Savoy Hotel , which was established in 1892, proved to be just as mature, refined and charming as our gogos. This time-honoured gem in the heart of Kimberley boasts 45 luxurious rooms, and hosts high teas and dinner galas – the gogos indulged in some leisurely time before enjoying dinner drizzled with impeccable service from the staff.

World of the Flamingos – Kamfers Dam
For a spectacular sight and incredible experience, the gogos were treated to a trip to Kamfers Dam where thousands of flamingos descend to breed and take in the lush surrounds. Approximately 20 000 birds call the Kamfers Dam home and their presence on the man-made, S-shaped island in the middle of the dam has become a popular attraction for visitors and bird-watchers.
