The Gogos enjoy the Free State

20 Jan 2017

We think everyone should get to enjoy all that South Africa has to offer, most of all the wisest of our nation – the Gogos. The “Gogos on Tour” initiative aims to treat our senior citizens to some awesome experiences at various places across their provinces.

This week, the lovely gogos from the Free State were treated and delighted to a host of activities, and this is what they got up to…

Naval Hill

Navel Hill, the first stop for our senior citizens, dominates the Bloemfontein skyline and stands proudly in the heart of the City of Roses. Located within the Franklin Game Reserve, it is known for its natural beauty and historical significance. It is currently the only nature reserve in the world to be located in the middle of a city. Providing people with an escape into nature and magical views of the City of Roses, visitors to Bloemfontein should take some time to stroll through the reserve, which is exactly what our gogos did.

Bloemfontein Zoo

This is an ideal place to come and view over 100 different species of animals including four of the Big Five. A visit to the Bloemfontein Zoo was the perfect opportunity for our gogos to learn about some of the wildlife we have in South Africa. You can stroll around the grounds, which cover an area of approximately 15 hectares and see a variety of animals including over 65 mammal species and a large variety of birds.

Spend the day here and enjoy a picnic on a grassy patch in the gardens with your family.

Summer – October 1st: 08:00 to 18:00 and Winter – April 1st: 08:00 to 17:00

After a busy day of sightseeing in and around the city of Bloem, the gogos were ready to check-in to their accommodation for the night at Southern Sun Bloemfontein where they were welcomed with a cold drink before they enjoyed a buffet dinner together.

Southern Sun Bloemfontein is all about traditional hospitality, contemporary style, and the perfect blend of old-world charm and modern style. A beautifully landscaped garden with a sparkling pool and its proximity to nearby city attractions ensure that hotel guests can relax, while travellers and tourists are only minutes away from golf courses, theatres, stadiums and the Bloemfontein city centre.

Day two and the gogos were off to…

Free State National Botanical Gardens

This garden, on the outskirts of Bloemfontein, spans a valley between picturesque dolerite koppies. From November to March, most of the plants in the garden are in full bloom. From March to June, the colourful autumn shades of yellow and red dominate. The natural areas of the garden are a haven for wildlife and bird species

A pampering session and lunch at Zizi Restaurant were enjoyed in the gardens. Zizi Restaurant, in the Free State National Botanical Garden, offers affordable delicacies and the yummiest of hearty food. Bring the whole family and enjoy good service, with a stunning view of the garden. Children can play in front of the restaurant while you relax with a sundowner.
