It’s without a doubt that the Wild Coast has so much to offer especially with regard to accommodation where visitors get to relax and appreciate their surroundings in a scenic, lush and tranquil setting.

What’s up there with the rest of these quaint and beautiful lodges, hotels and B&Bs, possibly even raising the bar is Bulungula Lodge. A hidden gem that’s situated in the heart of the Wild Coast and near Nqileni Village, a traditional Xhosa village.

Upon arrival, guests will notice the 10 huts sprawled across the land and positioned in such a way that it gives guests in each hut a perfect view of the waves crashing on the shoreline below. According to Bulungula’s management, an artist from abroad spent nearly nine months decorating, painting and creating a visual masterpiece for each hut, giving guests that African feel.

Hut prices per night range from R190 for a dorm room to R570 for a triple room. If camping out and staring up at a starry sky is your thing, Bulungula offers tents from R100 per night for a standard tent to R420 for a luxury safari tent. These are incredibly reasonable prices considering the experience and hospitality guests get.

Highlights of the lodge definitely have to be the interaction with the Nqileni locals. Guests get to truly immerse themselves in the Xhosa culture, their way of living and how they celebrate life through dance and song. From face painting, brick making, maize stamping and traditional food preparation with the village women to learning how to catch crayfish and octopus by hand with the village men, there’s undoubtedly something for everyone to enjoy. For those that are more adventurous, explore the beautiful Xhora River by canoe or gallop on the water’s edge along the shoreline by horseback.

For anyone seeking adventure in the Wild Coast, Bulungula Lodge offers that and so much more.
